Mobility
Functional mobility and independence
Functional mobility is how you move in order to live: bed to chair, chair to toilet, through the kitchen, and out to the car. Occupational therapy practices those moves in the places they actually happen.
Who this helps
- Getting up, turning, or walking through the house takes extra help
- You are safer with a cane, walker, or furniture and want to use it well
- A hospital stay left the old routine out of reach
- You want to stay in your home and do more for yourself
What a visit includes
- Practice of the transfers and routes you use every day
- A check of equipment you already have
- Advice when a different chair height or rail would help
- A short plan for what to practice between visits

Questions
Do you teach gait training like physical therapy?
The visit is tied to a daily task, such as getting to the bathroom. It is not a treadmill program.
Can a caregiver be there?
Yes. Caregivers are part of the plan.
