Knee

When a knee is painful, swollen, or newly replaced, the hard part is often the day around it: pants and socks, the car, the toilet, and standing at the sink. Occupational therapy works on those tasks. It does not replace physical therapy for the knee itself.

Who this helps

  • Dressing, socks, or shoes are difficult because of the knee
  • Stairs, the car, or a low chair have become a problem
  • Knee replacement is scheduled or just finished
  • You want the house ready before you come home

What a visit includes

  • Practice with dressing and getting up from the chair and toilet
  • A check of the rooms you use in a normal day
  • Equipment advice when a reacher, seat, or rail would help
  • Notes your family can follow

Questions

Do you treat the knee joint?

No. Occupational therapy helps you live with the knee during daily tasks. Physical therapy, if ordered, still covers the joint.

Is this only for replacement surgery?

No. Arthritis, pain, and stiffness count too, if they are changing how you get through the day.
